Time - Topic 12

One of the hardest things for most 3rd graders is telling time.  Since many people no longer wear watches with faces (not digital) we might need a little more practice using a clock.  This site allows you to see a clock with real time where you can add/delete time and it has a digital clock next to it that you can see or hide to help check your work.  It's really neat!  Click here to practice using a clock!

Math Buddies Last Friday

Last Friday, our class had visitors!  Our math buddies from Mrs. Adams' 4th grade class came to work on multiplication vocabulary with us.  Mrs. Adams showed everyone how to make a really cool foldable working with the vocabulary: factor and multiple.  After finishing, Mrs. Henneberry showed everyone how to play a fun multiplication/division game called "Salute" which is similar to the "Heads Up" game.

Fourth Grade Math Buddies

Last Friday, room 13 was really lucky to be able to visit Mrs. Adams' fourth grade class!  We played multiplication fact practice games together! Games included: Baseball Math, Slides and Ladders, and Beat the Calculator.  It was a lot of fun, and we learned a lot from our buddies.   Check out the photos below!

Multiplication

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are starting our multiplication unit today! In a short amount of time we have already memorized our 0s and 1s facts! We are now working on memorizing our 2s. Something that is new this year, due to the change in the Massachusetts State Frameworks, is that we won't be practicing up to 12x12 (as our 1st term report card says), but we will be practicing up to 10x10. I will teach students the trick with the 11s, but I will not be expecting any child to memorize or master the 11s or 12s facts.

As our unit progresses, I will be switching students on xtramath whom are still on addition or subtraction over to multiplication. This is to give them the opportunity to practice their multiplication facts nightly (and not in addition to their other fact practice). If you have any questions or concerns about me switching your child over, please let me know and I'll be happy to discuss it with you. I plan to make the switch after our winter break to give children a chance to finish up their addition/subtraction facts. If you rather me switch your child over sooner, please send me an email and I will do it. The only downside to Xtramath is that it does have your child practice up to 12x12. If you child becomes stuck with the 11 and 12 facts later in this unit, then we can discuss moving your child on from multiplication to division fact practice.

In addition to Xtramath there are plenty of wonderful resources and games out there for fun ways of practicing the facts. There are many apps out there as well as websites that make fact practice fun. On our classroom blog I have complied some fun websites for the kids to use. Please check out: Multiplication and Divison for those suggestions. If you find any other great websites that you'd me to add to my list, please let me know! I am always on the look out for more options!

We are also learning some games that you can play with dice or playing cards that can also make it fun to play at home. The children also learned the "red light challenge" multiplication fact game today in class that they can play while they are in the car stuck at a red light. 

Please help encourage your child's automaticity by making sure they practice every night with their facts. If there is any other suggestions or ideas you'd like me to share, feel free to give me a call or send me and email and I'm happy to find more options for your child.

Mystery Mathematician!

On Thursdays we will be welcoming in a Mystery Mathematician from 2-2:30 to help facilitate math games that correspond with the math concepts that we are learning in class.

Unit 2 and 3 - Addition & Subtraction

Need a little help practicing your addition and subtraction facts or with bigger addition/subtraction problems?  Try one of these websites to help practice those skills!


Math Mayhem is a website where you can practice you math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division) against other people on the web.  You can input your first name or leave it as guest.  It's a race of the clock to answer as many problems as you can in that time.  At the end you'll see your score compared to others who played at the same time.  It's a lot of fun!  Try it out by clicking here!


"Math Baseball" is a game that Everyday Math has as well as the great website, FunBrain.  Here you can play the game at home, by yourself! You can choose addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division.  For each right answer you get you a hit.  FunBrain will decide if that hit is a single, double, triple, or home run.  If you get an answer wrong then you get an out.  Just like in baseball, three outs and the inning (game) is over.  Try "Math Baseball" here!


If you need a visual for numbers, try using virtual base ten blocks!  Your job is to drag base ten block pieces (cubes, rods, and flats) to create numbers.  Hands at the bottom will clap and you'll hear cheers if you get it correct!  It's a good way to practice what digits in a number mean! Practice using base ten blocks here!


Is rounding hard/confusing for you?  Here is a site where you can play the "Sea Shell Rounding" activity.  Make the numbers that end in 1 through 4 into the next lower number that ends in 0. For example 84 rounded to the nearest ten would be 80. Numbers that end in a digit of 5 or more should be rounded up to the next ten. The number 58 rounded to the nearest ten would be 60.  Look at the number on each shell. Click on the nearest ten. Collect a sand dollar each time you choose the correct answer!  Try it by clicking here!

Math Vocabulary

Room 13 is working hard to continue to add to our vocabulary notebooks!  One of the sections we've been starting to fill in lately is our math vocabulary.

We've started unit 6 on Geometry which brings us wonderful new (and old) vocabulary terms such as: parallel, perpendicular, line, line segment, ray, angle, right angle, vertex, etc.

To help your child at home with vocabulary, I've included a link below to what will soon be on our new math world wall in the classroom! It has lots of math vocabulary words that have some illustration with the name that gives its definition.  This can be a fun and visual way for students to learn what all these fantastic new words mean!

Not all of these words are specific to 3rd grade nor are all of these words we've encountered so far.  However, I think they are just too good to not look at! I hope you feel the same way.
